How To Style The Beverly Boxy Top Pattern For All Four Seasons
How To Style The Beverly Boxy Top Pattern For All Four Seasons
Do you ever get so excited about a crocheted or knitted garment pattern, find your yarn, spend the time making your very own version, and then wind up rarely wearing the finished piece? I think this is a pretty typical situation for a lot of makers. Sometimes it can be hard to integrate a self-made item into your everyday wardrobe, whether it feels too precious or you’re just not sure how to style it.
While my Beverly Boxy Top (pattern available here) is something I’ve worn more regularly than a lot of my own designs, I’m just now starting to really feel comfortable styling it. Sometimes, you just have to get used to a garment, let it start to feel “worn in” as you find ways to pair it with your existing wardrobe.
The Beverly Boxy Top lends itself to those cool, flowy art teacher vibes and is great for layering, and when worked in a linen yarn especially, is also a very versatile top. So I’ve styled two outfits each for all four seasons to give you some ideas.
Spring 1. As A Flowy Cover-Up For A Sleeveless Dress With Sandals
The first spring outfit is pictured above. Beverly is an oversized, flowy boxy top with wide sleeves, so it can make a great cover-up over a sleeveless dress for cold shoulders on a breezy spring evening.
Spring 2. Casual High-Waisted Pleated Mom Shorts and Slip-On Flats
For those warmer spring days, Beverly’s cropped length pairs well with a high-waisted short. I styled it here with with some pleated, cuffed, vintage-style mom shorts for a tidy, classic look. I wore some comfy striped slip-on flats with this look, but you could easily swap in some tennis shoes for the same overall look.
Summer 1. Swap The Pleated Shorts For Frayed Shorts And The Flats With Sandals For A Cool, Casual Look
The first summer look is similar to the second spring one, but the cuffed shorts have been switched out for a pair of frayed button fly shorts for a different vibe. I also switch out the slip-ons for some easy flat sandals. As mentioned in the first spring look, Beverly makes a great cover-up, so you can easily throw it on over a bathing suit.
Summer 2. Dressed Up Tucked Into A Midi Skirt With Wedge Heels
Here, I’ve dressed up the Beverly Boxy Top by tucking it into a high-waisted midi skirt and adding some vintage-style wedge heels. Beverly’s gently curved neckline and boxy fit make for a great base to showcase unique necklaces, so I threw on a longer necklace with a statement pendant for this dressier outfit.
Autumn 1. Swap The Heels For Ankle Boots With Fleece-Lined Tights And Layered Socks
Now we can take that same outfit into fall by dressing it down. Just swap the heels for ankle boots and have fun layering some cozy, chunky socks over some fleece tights for a little bit of added warmth as those cooler autumn days begin to roll in. I think an added beanie would be cute, too.
Autumn 2. Layer High-Waisted Pleated Shorts Over Fleece-Lined Tights And Add A Cozy Infinity Scarf
My love for shorts over tights strikes again (see some similar looks I styled here). You can really play up Beverly’s layering properties here – such as the wide sleeves and boxy fit – by adding a chunky infinity scarf, tights and socks, and even a long sleeve t-shirt or vest over top if desired. Ankle boots give you a chance to show off some cute socks, if you’d like.
Winter 1. Layer Over A Long-Sleeved T-Shirt And Add A Beanie
We’ve reached winter! Where I live our winter days can go from uncomfortably mild to freezing cold incredibly fast, so here’s an outfit for those milder days. Pretty much the same as the last autumn outfit, but I’ve added a long sleeved t-shirt and a cozy crocheted beanie.
Layers can make for some fun color play, whether you mix random colors and patterns or coordinate as I’ve done here by keeping the socks, pleated shorts, infinity scarf, and long-sleeved t-shirt all shades of blue and the tights and Beverly Boxy Top grey for an almost monochrome outfit. BUT, the beanie adds a little pop of golden yellow and if you could see it more closely, the embroidered floral detail on the beanie features little blue French knots which tie in with the overall outfit.
Winter 2. Make It Formal With a Long, Structured Paisley Skirt And Pretty Accessories
And we’ve reached the final look. This hand-me-along skirt is one of my favorite because of it’s paisley print and more structured fit. I love styling it with winter outfits since it’s lined and adds a good, windbreaking layer of warmth. Catch a few other wintry ways I’ve styled it here and here. Once again, I’ve coordinated a bunch of blue elements with Beverly’s grey color. I also added a little hair accessory – one of my handmade barettes (you can find some, all one of a kind, in my little shop here). I think this outfit would be great for a more formal holiday get-together.
I had a lot of fun putting all these outfits together to show how a handcrocheted garment can transition for all seasons. A boxy, oversized, cropped top like the Beverly Boxy Top can work easily for all seasons, and I know brainstorming for these featured outfits has inspired me to incorporate it into outfits more often.
