Way back in 2016, this big crochet infinity scarf was a part of my made-to-order accessories collection. I mostly focus on garment patterns now, but I’ve wanted to share some of my old accessory patterns for free on the blog.

This infinity scarf is big on purpose, long enough to be double wrapped around your neck and wide enough to be pulled up over your head as a hood. It makes for a great extra layer in the winter cold.

Big Crochet Shell Stitch Infinity Scarf Pattern

Materials:

worsted weight yarn (I used Caron Simply Soft here, not affiliated) in two colors if making contrasting edging as shown
N – 9.00mm hook
darning needle for weaving in ends

Stitches Used (US terms):

Foundation Single Crochet (FSC): see tutorial here
Stacked Single Crochet (STSC): see tutorial here
single crochet (sc)
double crochet (dc)

Shell Stitch Instructions:

To create a full shell  – 1 sc in first st, skip one st, 5 dc in next st, skip one st, repeat.
To create a half shell at the beginning of a row – worked into sc st in row below, 1 STSC, 2 dc, then work full shells as normal until end of row.
To create a half shell at the end of a row – in final sc st of row below, 3 dc, turn.

A Note On Shell Construction: Refer to the diagram above for basic shell construction. Left-handed crocheters, note that STSC will be on the left for you, not the right as shown above – essentially just flip the chart.

Details:

Gauge:

4×4 inch (10×10 centimeter) square, in shell stitch – 2.5 shells across, 7 rows

Finished Cowl Measurements: approximately 60 inches (152 centimeters) circumference by 15 inches (38 centimeters) wide. Size can be adjusted by adding or subtracting rows or stitches, but keep in mind this scarf is designed as intended to be large enough to double as a hood in cold weather.

Directions:

FSC: 37 sts, turn
Row 1: work 9 full shells across, turn
Row 2: Start row with half shell, then 8 full shells, end row with half shell, turn
Rows: 3 – 113: repeat rules for Rows 1 – 2. To start a full shell row, make first sc into top of final dc of half shell below. Each shell should be worked into the next sc st from the previous row, and each sc into the center dc of each next shell from the previous row. Work final sc of full shell row into top of STSC of half shell below, turn. For half shell rows, work each half shell into the sc’s at the beginning and end of the previous row, and work all full shells in between as normal.
Row 114: 1 STSC in first sc of previous row, 1 sc each in center 3 sts of shell, *1 dc next sc of previous row, 1 sc each in center 3 sts of shell, repeat from * to end of row, 1 last dc st in last sc of previous row.

Once final row is completed, join final row edge with starting FSC row edge by working single crochet into both (37 sc total). Fasten off and weave in ends. (Note: If you are using the same color for both main scarf body and edging, you can skip fastening off and simply turn scarf so that you are now working along the edge.)

Edging: If you fastened off to switch colors, join Color B next to seam with slst, sc along side of scarf working 1 sc into each sc and 2 into each dc/STSC. After last sc, join with slst into first sc. Fasten off. Repeat on other side of scarf.

Weave in ends.
